If you have fine hair one of your biggest challenges is achieving the look of big, voluminous hair. It can seem impossible, but if you use the proper technique it can save you from having to use a bunch of product and a lot of heat on your hair.  We caught up with NYC hairstylist Rachel @Hair_SsansShe shows us how to achieve volume with a blowout on  a client that has naturally straight/wavy hair.  As she blow dries her client’s hair, she pins the hair into pin curls so that her hair has even more body.

Now you may be thinking, “I don’t have straight hair like that, so how does this apply to me?” Well, here’s what you can do. Using a brush to blow your hair out, rather than the blow dryer attachment creates more movement in your hair.  If you’re wearing a sew-in and are looking for a natural, body look then this is the technique you want to use so that you don’t have to go back through the hair and apply heat. If your hair is natural and a bit more coarse and you are planning to straighten it then you can follow these additional steps:

  • After washing your hair put it into braids to and let it air dry until it’s about 80% dry.  This will stretch the hair while it’s drying.  (You can skip this step if you’re short on time)
  • Add some heat protectant  to your hair and blow dry it on medium heat (not the highest setting).
  • When you are blow drying your hair first use a Denman brush or something similar, instead of the blowdryer attachment.
  • Then, when you’ve finished blow drying your hair straight, you can use a round brush to smooth your hair out in the places that didn’t get straight enough (especially in your roots).
  • Complete your style by using a flat iron to straighten it or wear it in the blown out state.

{Please note, if you’re not familiar with the round brush technique I would recommend that you go to a licensed professional and explain to them what you want (voluminous hair).  Your hair can result in heat damage if you don’t know what you’re doing.}

Again, this is one of many techniques to achieve that “big hair”look.  However, this is very similar to how Dominican salons do the infamous Dominican Blowout.  Have you tried this technique before? How did your hair turn out?
